An apology to parents.....

....for the torture your ears are about to receive.

Today in Room 4 we made a chicken in a cup. This involves using a plastic cup, string and a skewer to create a noise machine that can get quite loud! Tomorrow we are investigating our own changes to the contraption to see what might change in the sound - for example, what happens if we make the string longer? What happens if we use a different size cup?

We learnt a couple of weeks ago that sound is made from vibrations. So what is vibrating in the cup and why on earth is it so loud! Check out some photos of the construction process and a video of the finished product being used!

Speeches

This Friday is when Room 4 will be delivering their speeches to the rest of the class! Over the past 4 weeks we have worked on our speeches, focusing on their content and delivery. I am really looking forward to hearing them this Friday and they will be recorded and uploaded to seesaw for viewing at home.

Enlargement in Minecraft

This week we have learned about enlargement in Math. When we enlarge an object it gets bigger or smaller by a scale. E.g. When we enlarge something by a scale of 2, we are making it two times bigger.

We created our own designs in our math books and then recreated these in Minecraft using blocks. We then enlarged our shape by a scale of 2 and built this next to our original shape.

Check out some photos of our building in action and some completed enlargements!

Minecraft in Room 4

This week we have started work in our own Minecraft server. It is a place for us to be creative, have fun, and learn! Our first task was to build Main Street and start sectioning off properties for each stud not to build their house on. In Math we planned this space using our grid lines. In doing this we were learning about representing 3D space on a 2d plan and also how to use keys and draw to scale. Have a look at some of our work so far on our creative world.

Blind Spot and After Images

In Science this week we have been investigating our blind spots. We have tested a range of variables to see where our blind spot is including colour, shapes and size.

We also had a look at afterimages. Check out the link below for an online afterimage demonstration!

Auckland Museum Trip!

Today was very exciting as Room 4 and the rest of the middle syndicate travelled to Auckland Museum to have a look at some artefacts from ancient civilisations. Our educator Josh delivered a great session where we were able to handle some artefacts from the museum's collection! As well as the education session, Room 4 also explored other parts of the museum.

First we stopped off in the Maori and Pacific collection. We are going to be using our experience from this for some creative writing, so keep an eye out for that soon!

We also looked through the second floor science areas which had some hands-on exhibits and plenty of fossils!

Have a look below for some photos from the trip!
